Our Farms |
PlantationsOur plantations in Ecuador are located just south of the equatorial line in a high mountain valley. We chose this location for two reasons. Firstly we need to be close to the sun, to maximize luminosity to make our roses grow fast and tall. Secondly the higher we are up in the mountains the less bugs we have to fight. GreenhousesOur greenhouses are built to protect the final product. They are covered with plastic to get an optimal environment with the highest luminosity, good soil and excellent spring water. In our farms we have an ambitious experimental program to take advantage of the newest technology. Large reservoirs provide water to the greenhouses and this fact guarantee us the permanent water disposal. The reservoirs have a three months water capacity with high quality water that comes from the nearby mountains. In our greenhouses we handle our plants with the utmost care for the environment. Our qualified personnel receives continuous training based on the ultimate rose growing techniques. Post-Harvest ProcessOur post-harvest rooms have a combined area of several thousand square meters. The first hours of the day are of greatest activity, since roses are cut very early in the morning. We classify our roses in sizes from 30 cm to 150 cm. Our post harvest team controls the opening stage and bud size of each rose. We bunch our roses in 10, 12, 20 or 25 stems per bunch, or according to our client's needs. On each bunch, you will find several labels, for instance one with the barcode and the day of cutting, the second with the name of the lady that did the bunch, etc. The Packing ProcessIn the first chamber at 5 ºC the roses go through an obligatory phase of preventive treatment and hydration. All our premium varieties of roses are bunched and after the last quality control, the final results of the selection process is shown. Packing in boxes is also done at 5 ºC before they are placed in the last chamber at 1.5ºC where they will stay until their short trip to the airport. We pack our roses in several several different box designs, according to the clients instructions. If the client wishes, we pack them in the clients own boxes with a unique design. The weight of a full box (i.e. two “half boxes”, also called tabacos) is between 22 and 24 kilos depending on the length and variety. ShippingThis is the final stage. The roses are ready for a long trip to Hong- Kong, London, Madrid, Miami or Milano, where they will captivate the final consumer for their beauty and their average 15-day vase-life. |
